Week 9- Juxtaposition [3]

Analogy is used to make a strange term be understood by comparing it with something familliar.
It is a good way to make brief advertisements easily understood in that short period of time.

Eg.
Love is like Coffee. It is bitter, but by adding those small things it becomes sweet. Being in love with someone and in a relationship are bittersweet. With memories, experience, sacrifice for the other, sharing, bitter becomes sweet.
A cup of coffee is hot and steamy like passionate relationship. Love is bittersweet, hot and steamy.

__________________________________________________________
we were given around a dozen words side by side to be matched randomly.
2 words that i have randomly chosen for association is
Dog and Water.

"Alex's dog ran into the water and retrieved the frisbee."

random association "waterdog" directly translated into Cantonese language sounds like dumpling.
___________________________________________________________
another 2 words that were chosen for 2 associations:
Fly and Spider

The spider slowly crawls towards the trapped fly on its web.

Spiders fly by spunning silk threads that can be lifted up by wind.

We were asked to combine 2 different animals and create a new animal that can't live long.

This is a combination between a cheetah and a turtle that I'd drawn. It wont' live long and have a short lifespan because of the following. A cheetah runs fast but unlike a lion, it does not have stamina. After running, a cheetah needs to rest for hours. However, this is balanced by their speed. They almost never fail in catching their prey. With a heavy turtle shell on its back, their stamina will be even more greatly diminished in a shorter time while reducing their speed. Therefore, this creature will not live long as they can't catch their preys.

Week 8- Juxtaposition [2]

This week we learn about juxtaposition again. Last week it was based on movies, this time we'll be based off similes/metaphors we see around us.
Advertisements uses metaphor + similes a lot for their taglines. When juxtaposition are used in advertisements, it gives a more lasting impression to viewers as they are active participants when they think and associate the different elements.

Metaphor = links 2 different elements together without using the word 'as/like'
Eg:
"Love is a Fine Wine"
From that metaphor of love, we can say that true love age like wine, becoming more intense as time goes by. Intensified by experience and memories, the couple is infatuated by each other.

"Death is an Awakening"
When we are at the brink of life and death, flashes of things important and significant will cross our minds. That is when we truly appreciate those memories and emotions.

Simile = link 2 different elements using the word "as / like"
Eg:
"As wise as an owl"
Owl has been used since ages ago to represent wisdom. Athena the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, is depicted accompanied by an owl often in paintings and statues.
"Athena, who was associated with art and philosophy, was depicted in owl-like bird-form. Hence, the picture of an owl was equated with the patrons of high thought."

Visual metaphor used in advertisements

"Driving a Rover is 'like' having a lion as a pet."

Unprotected Sex is 'like' being in bed with a venomous arachnid.

Not only that, we discussed about oxymoron in class.
It means the usage of 2 clearly different words that has different values. Though contradicting between each other, they make sense together.

For example,
Deafening silence. "Deafening" is often used to describe extremely loud sound. It is contradicted by "silence" which means the absence of sound.
Together, 'deafening silence' describes silence that is so extreme and prolonged; when you hopefully expect the silence to be broken, there is no sound.

Week 7- Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition means placing two different things together in a way that we naturally start comparing the two. Then, we'll start seeing the differences and similarities between them. This promotes creative thinking as we start to find out how to link the two different things. This is purely individual as different people with different backgrounds have different knowledge and experience.

The series that I'll be relating juxtaposition to is Kingdom Hearts. The theme 'friendship and betrayal' and 'light and darkness' are clearly shown in many parts of the series.

Friendship / betrayal and
Light/ Darkness

In order to save Kairi, Riku betrays Sora and join the darkness. Riku is jealous and mad at Sora for forgetting about them and hang out with new gang of friends. Riku is also jealous that Sora is the owner of Keyblade. However, we then find out that Riku is still loyal to the friendship but on the pretence of hating Sora so that the darkness will aid him in saving Kairi. Sora sacrificed himself to give Kairi her heart, which is inside his. The ending where the 3 of them should be going home together, is abruptly ruined as the darkness start closing in to the door to the Kingdom Hearts. Riku sacrificed himself as he closes the door upon himself to stop the darkness from getting to the Kingdom Hearts. As the door almost shut, Riku tells Sora with a sad smile, "Take care of her...", asking Sora to take his place as he is sealed inside. Instead of going home with Kairi, Sora decided to separate with her and they drifted away in two different worlds. Sora resume his journey to save Riku, while Kairi is left alone where they first begun their journey.

Loyalty/Betrayal and
Heart's Decision / Duty

When Sora's keyblade chooses Riku as the true master, Donald and Goofy don't know whether to stay with Sora or go to Riku's side. They had to follow King Mickey's orders to stay with the Keyblade master. Should they be loyal to the King's orders and betray Sora? Yet, they follow their hearts to stay loyal with Sora and betray King Mickey's orders by
abandoning their duty.

Hopelessness / Courage
After Sora's keyblade chose Riku as the true master, Sora lost his hope of saving Kairi and on the brink of losing his new companions [Donald and Goofy]. However, Sora is still determined to fight Riku even by using a wooden sword. This courage in Sora changes the Keyblade's perception. As Sora's heart is stronger, the keyblade returns to Sora's hands.
